“Battlestar Galactica – Season 1, Miniseries Pilot” has: 11 Comments, Sweet!

  1. Elisabeth says:

I love BSG and I think it is one of those programmes which gets better the more it develops. There are some overtly religious overtones, but the actual series is far more political (with a few major space battles thrown in, because who doesn’t love a good fight now and then?).

The problem this show has to begin with is that it has to set up the differing ideologies of the Cylons vs. the Humans. A monotheistic enemy vs. the polytheistic protagonists. You have to set up the humanoid Cylons, those actually capable of belief, along with the droids etc.

People are far too quick (both TV execs and the general public) to belittle a series before it finds its feet and gems are lost because of this. Give BSG a chance, take a look at the first few eps of the first series, where they really get into the meat of the story.

This is how the survivors get away, but the series deal with how they are actually going to survive. It’s obviously not going to be easy (4 series of cruising around having philosphical debates would bore even me) but what problems do they face? Food, water, etc., Who are the other cylon models and how many, if any, are on the fleet? How do you find them ar can you not trust anyone anymore? How do they keep law and order in a fleet this size?

Religion is part of the whole, but it is part of life, and a major part of a lot of people’s. To exclude it because you “would have thought that advanced civilisations did not require imaginary friends” is to deny a part of the human condition. Very few societies have no belief in a higher power.

Also, Yipyip, how much more Sci-Fi would you like BSG to be? It has space ships, robots, robots that look like people, granted there are no aliens yet, but there are plenty of other planets. There is war and space battles and Faster Than Light FTL travel. (Actually seeing as how we use the term alien to mean not of this earth, i suppose all of the characters in the show are aliens.) Tell you what I’ll photoshop a couple of Klingons and a Jedi in, perhaps a prawn or an Arachnid or two and maybe that will make you feel better, hmm?

MOVIE WAS GREAT STREAMING SERVICE SUCKS

  3. Drak says:

many cultures believe in a god as the center of there religion is it really far fetched to think that if there was other life in space that they could have similar religious teachings as we do its not like they get really in detail with what they think. So even if you dont believe in god many others do its not like they were trying to push any teaching on you. All im saying is if they were saying praise buddha or zeus and the other greek gods it wouldnt ruin this mini series for me. I liked this alot the only part that was annoying was the girl that kept appearing in the guys mind i hate when shows do that lol.

  4. Race Hazard says:

Wow… I’m completely amazed at the negative responses here. I was blown away by the miniseries, and I intend to watch the entire show.

I’m not American, and I am an atheist – although there are blatant references to Christianity, I really don’t see being Christian as necessary to enjoy the programme (nor necessary to appreciate the references themselves.)

    • Douglas says:

I think the word might be ‘Spiritualistic’. Especially after seeing that brilliant conclusive ending ‘Daybreak’ – ah… Silly me!
      ;)

  5. Joshua says:

hmmm, pt. 2 is the last half of part 1, part 1 should say full

  6. FootFunkSoup says:

Quality. Awesome writing for the genre, clever concept. The best sci-fi takes question “what if?” and builds a universe on that expanded possibility. BG does exactly that. What if humanity was faced with extinction in the far reaches of the space, away from home?
Propaganda? And what exactly is BG promoting? Being kind to others, value of life? Religion is the cornerstone of many sci-fi titles, including the aforementioned Dune. I love how some people can write 2 paragraphs about how lame the show is, without referencing any of the content. With all due respect, YipYip, take your anti-American sentiments elsewhere. And no, I am not American myself. But I can appreciate beautiful work.

  7. YipYip says:

Yeah this is rubbish. I would have thought that advanced civilisations did not require imaginary friends. Poorly written, acted, and god god god god every 5 min. am not even going to watch part 2. Maybe the 70s version is not so totally lame – I might check it out. I don’t even consider this sci fi, it is just American neo-religious propaganda with space ships and robots. Funny how propaganda goes through the roof when an empire is in its last days, Germany, England, Spain even, one can witness the same thing. God is not going to save you or your star spangled banner, sorry, you have to save yourselves. Start by not watching this crap.
If you want good sci fi try Moon (the movie), Dr. Who (classic who), Tarkovsky’s Solaris, 1984, 2001 a S.O., Lynch’s Dune… many of you have probably seen these – but I assure you I personally would have preferred to watch them again than put myself through the raping of the science fiction genre that is Battlestar Gaylactica.

    • Joshua says:

i agree with you on the classic sci-fi, fact i think their better then todays crap, but still, Battlestar galactica is pretty good, you have to admit, not the best, but im not sure what it’ll be like. many people recomended BSG to me, due to my fasination of genre’s like these. BSG is pretty good, (or at least the 1st part) and so are the orig dr. who, and dune (one of my favriots)

    • jim says:

BSG is not religious propaganda. BSB does bring up religion often, but as a debate between different ideas in society. That a set of characters hold an opinion in a work of fiction does not mean the artists creating it have the same beliefs. Is every, lets say for instance, Bob Dylan song to be considered autobiographical? Hardly. Also if you are opposed to overly religious tones in your sci-fi, you probably should not have listed 2001 a SO.

  8. [...] is telling me that Battlestar Galactica is awesome. We watched the pilot… Bit boring, too much book of mormon stuff in [...]
